RCS Softball Team has one of the highest GPAs in the state.
The NCHSAA Scholar Athlete Program is sponsored by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program’s “Click It or Ticket” initiative and provides certificates of recognition to individual students as well as teams that meet the qualification standards. For individuals to qualify, they must have a 3.5 weighted GPA or higher during the semester under consideration, and for a team to qualify for recognition they must have a combined unweighted GPA of 3.1 or higher during their semester of competition.
The RCS softball team had the third highest GPA, at 3.802.
The Scholar Athlete Program is the association's largest voluntary program. This year the NCHSAA awarded over 20,000 certificates and recognized 890 qualifying teams across the state.

RCS Among 2020 Best High Schools
Roxboro Community School (RCS) has once again ranked high on the US News & World Report’s list of best high schools in the nation.
Out of 17,700 high schools across America, RCS this year is ranked number 45 among North Carolina high schools and 1,663 nationwide.
Schools are ranked according to how well they serve all students, regardless of economic or ethnic background, according to US News & World Report. The ranking compares schools based on graduation rates, performance on state assessments, academic performance, college readiness, and students’ reading and math proficiency.

NCSBE Course Guidance
On Friday, March 27, 2020, the North Carolina State Board of Education issued guidance relating to important issues for all public schools. Of major concern is course credit for seniors and underclassmen. We would like to provide additional clarification and guidance on these issues as they relate to RCS students in grades 6-11 and seniors.
GRADES 6-11:
When remote learning occurs in grades 6-11, LEAs/Charters will provide meaningful feedback to promote student growth.
LEAs/Charters may assign grades in the format the school already uses for grades 6-11 to evaluate progress. At this time, RCS teachers will continue to issue grades for work completed in a course.
In the event NC public schools do not reopen for face-to-face learning after May 15, additional statewide guidance for final grading to ensure equitable treatment for all students will be provided by the State Board of Education.
NCVPS teachers will continue to provide feedback and grade submitted assignments in Canvas. In NCVPS courses, zeroes will not be recorded for missing assignments after March 13.
NCVPS will provide additional grading information to its stakeholders once a decision has been made by the State concerning final grades.
SENIORS:
NCDPI’s goals for the Senior Class of 2020 are to graduate high school seniors by meeting minimum SBE graduation requirements of 22 credits on the originally scheduled graduation date.
Considerations:
Remote learning for graduating seniors will be prioritized to focus on meeting graduation requirements with a particular emphasis on students who were not meeting expectations as of March 13.
NCDPI encourages making remote learning opportunities available for seniors to engage students, continue student growth, and respond to social and emotional needs.
Students may not be able to finish the instructional year equitably across North Carolina. Access to, and quality of, remote learning for NC Public School students varies across the state.
Students have made progress in their learning this semester and need recognition of their learning until school closure on March 16.
Grading practices for transcript purposes will hold students harmless for the impact of COVID-19. Note: PowerSchool is in the process of developing a new grade scale due to COVID-19.
SENIOR PLAN TO GRADUATE CLASS of 2020
Fall Courses: Students will receive grades for fall courses as already stored, year-long and semester.
Fall grades will count toward GPA.
For year-long courses, the fall term grade will be counted into the GPA.
Spring Courses: Students will receive a Pass "PC19" or Withdrawal "WC19" based on their learning as of March 13 for spring courses.
If the student has an F as of March 13 for graduation requirements, districts/schools shall provide remote learning opportunities for the student to improve to a passing grade.
NCVPS
Fall term grade of yearlong courses will be used in GPA calculations for seniors.
Senior students’ March 10 progress report grade will be used to report the Pass "PC19" or Withdrawal "WC19" status. Seniors who are not passing will be provided the opportunity to resubmit assignments multiple times in an attempt to earn a “Pass” in the course.
PCC CLASSES
Students enrolled in PCC courses should work toward completing the classes in the current term in order to obtain course credit. Note that PCC will NOT be on Spring Break April 13-17, and instructors will continue grading during that week. Students should continue to communicate with PCC instructors. Resources and more information pertaining to PCC can be found on the college’s COVID-19 reference page on the PCC website. Additional Information for Parents
RCS Administration will provide more information as we receive additional guidance from the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction.
We appreciate your continued support of our distance learning efforts. Please encourage your student(s) to log in and complete assignments daily. Students should continue to do their best during this time and should reach out to their teachers if they have any questions.
No students will earn an automatic “pass” for their courses; students are still expected to learn and complete assignments for the remainder of the course.
Our main focus is to make sure all of our students are prepared for the next grade level and/or post-secondary education.

RCS High School Course Registration
The deadline to register for classes for the 2020-2021 school year is tomorrow (April 7) at 3 p.m. Students who have not registered yet, please do so ASAP. Students who do not enter their course requests will have a schedule made for them by the Guidance Department and will not be able to make any changes. Roxboro Community School has a vacancy on its Board of Directors and invites interested candidates to apply.
The Board provides school oversight rather than day-to-day management of operations.

Clarification on Spring Break
This is to help clarify the information that was sent out yesterday regarding decisions pertaining to Distance Learning and Spring Break. We have been following guidance from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction as we developed our Distance Learning plan. Here is some of the information we took into consideration as we made the decision.
Governor Cooper issued Executive Order 117, closing all public schools from March 16-March 30.
Students were not allowed to come to school for instruction those weeks.
The state issued guidance that schools could use the week of March 16-20 as Spring Break. RCS decided to use that time to finalize our Distance Learning Plan instead. RCS decided not to utilize that week as Spring Break in the event that we returned to school and were able to keep the week of April 13-17 as Spring Break.
Students were at home and did not receive any instruction March 16-20.
RCS began delivering Distance Learning on Monday, March 23.
On March 23, Governor Cooper issued Executive Order 121, extending the closure of all public schools through May 15.
Since our students had already missed one week of instruction, we decided to continue providing distance learning through Spring Break.
We also understood that even though the Governor has issued a “Stay at Home” order effective March 30, some families may have already made plans to be out of town for Spring Break.
Our decision to continue instruction during the week that had been planned as Spring Break was an attempt to accommodate those families who may travel, and at the same time continue with delivery of instruction that had already been lost the week of March 16-20.
If students are able to go somewhere during the week of April 13-17, they will still have access to instruction via distance learning.
For students who do not travel, we want to provide continuity of instruction during the week of April 13-17.
This is an ever evolving situation, and guidance from North Carolina leaders changes almost daily. When making decisions, RCS keeps the best interests of students at the forefront, and appreciates all our staff has done to plan and deliver instruction during this trying time. We will continue to follow guidance received from the NC Department of Public Instruction, NC Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Governor Roy Cooper.

Federal Testing Waived; State Waiver Likely
On March 23, the State Board of Education agreed to approve a recommendation to seek a waiver of federal testing requirements. The U.S. Department of Education approved the federal waiver.
The North Carolina State Board of Education and Superintendent Mark Johnson are in close contact with General Assembly members concerning the waivers necessary to address state testing requirements related to COVID-19 for this school year.
The North Carolina tests that would be waived include end-of-grade tests in reading and math in grades 3 through 8, science tests in grades 5 and 8 and end-of-course tests in Math 1 and 3, Biology and English 2. The waiver would also include the state’s A-F school performance grades as well as a number of elements included in the state’s School Report Cards.
We at RCS will keep parents informed as we move forward with the testing changes resulting from COVID-19.
NC School Closures Extended
Governor Roy Cooper has extended the closure of all North Carolina public schools until May 15.
RCS will continue to deliver instruction via distance learning. As earlier stated, Distance Learning information is available on the school website.

Distance Learning Begins Monday

This is just a reminder that we will implement our Distance Learning plan on Monday, March 23. Please make sure your son/daughter logs in and works on their assignments on a daily basis. Encourage them to stay caught up with their assignments. If they have questions, students should contact their teachers during the office hours that are listed. There is a link for teacher office hours on our Distance Learning page.

Please understand this is a new process for everyone and we will make adjustments as needed. We are all in this together and we at RCS want to make the best of this learning opportunity for our students during these trying times.
