Middle School

Jarome Mason

This week’s middle school student spotlight is sixth grader, Jarome Mason. He was nominated by his 6th grade teachers because he a kind, considerate, hard worker. Jennifer Carter, sixth grade social studies teacher, said “Jarome is the sweetest child! He tries his very best and is always kind to others. He is a pleasure to work with!” EC teacher, Susan Bagbey said he gets along well with other students and is always willing to participate. “He is a joy to have in class.”

Mason said he was surprised that his teachers chose him for this recognition. He said his favorite class this year was math because “it’s easy!” He also said his favorite thing about being at RCS is having nice teachers.

High School

Kaylen Newton

This week's high school student spotlight is senior, Kaylen Newton. Newton has been an RCS student since 6th grade. Along with her classes at RCS, Kaylen is taking 12 credit hours at PCC, planning to graduate with her Associate's degree when she graduates from RCS. Along with her academics, Newton plays basketball, is a member of the Sr Beta Club and HOSA, and is a student blood drive leader in the community.

Newton was nominated by biotechnology teacher and HOSA advisor, Jill Clayton, who commented on how she knew Newton could successfully handle things at the blood drive HOSA helped organize earlier this fall while she was out. “Kaylen worked diligently the day of the drive to check in donors and kept things running smoothly…I did not have to worry about a thing,” Clayton said.

Newton said it felt good to be chosen as the spotlight. She said she likes RCS because of it's  rigorous academic environment. “I like to be challenged academically," she said, and RCS has challenged her academically over the years. Newton also appreciates the effort teachers put into teaching and getting to know each student.
